Blodeuwedd Goddess of flowers, emotions, the wisdom of innocence and initiation ceremonies.
Blodeuwedd was magically created from a field of flowers, for the God Llew, by his uncle Gwydion and while she liked him good enough, she was not “in love with him” so to speak. But eventually as is so often the way, a man came along who she did fall in love with. They plotted together to kill Llew but as he had magical protections placed on him by his uncle, he was super hard to kill and it was going to take something big to do the job. So Blodeuwedd created a magical spear over a month of Sundays, and got him to stand in an improbable position, and yep she killed him with the spear. His uncle, Gwydion, was quite angry about this and turned her into an owl, banishing her to the night. The story has a lot of red flags.. on both sides and is quite complex to untangle. But it is a very interesting read. Blodeuwedd's tale is the last of the four branches of the Mabinogion.
For me she represents flowers and springtime, young love but also the idea that you can’t force anyone to fall in love, but sometimes the young can be foolish enough to believe that they can. And that life is sometimes a weird complex bunch of inconsistencies, hurt and mistakes, but maybe those will transform you into something else. And let's face it owls are cool
I have used a combination of feathers and flowers to represent Blodeuwedd in this artwork and a butterfly for transformation, as over the years it has been told that she was made of flowers and feathers. At her base there are offerings of a chalice, and the broken spear from the maginobian
